Leash and Collar Training
The leash and collor style of training, is one of many methods of training a dog. I think this style is especially effective because it reinforces your role as the handler or leader. This form of training has been around for many years now, and has been perfected to be as effective as possible. This style of training will result in a obediant, friendly, member of the family.
Keep in mind that this form of training may not work for every dog and breed. If you know your dog well enough you should be able to tell if this style of training is appropriate for them. This style of reinforcement is especially important for dogs that have a great deal of responsibilites, such as a rescue, police, and gaurd dogs.
With leash/collar training your main tool is of course, the collar and/or leash. We will use the leash as the main form of communication between you and your dog. You can prompt your dog by lightly tugging the leash or with more force for larger infractions. It all depends on the situation and you, the owner, know better than anyone how much force should be used when signaling your dig with the leash. And as always we never want to inflict any harm or pain on our pets, as this is considered abuse.
Purchasing a collar:
To make sure you getting the most out of your training there are a few specifications to look for in a collar. Its especially important that the training collar fits your dog appropriately, by doing so its easier for you to handle, and more importantly, its safer for your dog. After you've decided on a collar be sure you are placing it on them correctly. Be sure to refer to the collars packaging for directions. The size and weight of your dogs collar and leash is equally important, make sure the leash/collar combo you purchase is the appropriate size for your furry friend.
There is a fairly simple routine behind this method. To put it simply, you walk your dog through the expected action with the leash. After its clear that your dog fully understands the command, you let them try it with you and you make use of the leash for mistakes or bad behaviour. But don't forget that the leash only serves as a reminder to your pet, and shouldn't be used as a punishment.
This form of training teaches your dog to trust the owners directions and commands without question. The eventul goal of this style of training is to get your dog to obey your direction with or without a leash at hand. And was with any training style, always remember to reward your dog for good behavior and following through on your commands.
